The name Reuteri^® is actually a registered trademark of BioGaia.  BioGaia licensed their product to Nature's Sunshine Products, one of the very few companies that it has chosen to do so.

The name of the bacteria in the product is known as Lactobacillus Reuteri.  It is one of the few bacteria that is actually native to the human intestinal tract.  Many probiotics come from sources outside the body, such as acidophilus from various dairy products.  The L. Reuteri used is this product is extracted from the breast milk of women in the Andes mountain ranges--a place where nature is virtually untouched by chemicals and other man-made products.  It is generally safe for virtually anyone, including newborns, pregnant women, and those with immune system weakness.

Lactobacillus Reuteri has been the subject of many studies.  The studies focus on three main areas--immune system, gastro-intestinal tract, and oral health.  Positive results have been consistently seen in all three areas.  In two studies involving adults and children in daycare facilities, L. Reuteri was credited with reducing the risk of catching common infections such as fever, intestinal sickness, and the common cold.  It seems to have the ability to activate certain killer cells in the immune system, giving protective benefit.
