Many people do not realize that about 400 species of bacteria inhabit the intestinal and digestive tracts--many of them helpful and necessary to good health. Two of the most well-known types of bacteria are acidophilus (Lactobacillus acidophilus) and bifidus bacteria (Bifidobacterium bifidus).
